Events
I’m not currently scheduling school visits, due to my work and family schedule. I do occasionally schedule story times or other appearances, though I’m not able to do a lot of those either. But if you have an event you’d like to ask me about, please don’t hesitate to ask. Note my comments below about welcoming environments, and then email me at the address below.
Welcoming Environments
Our job as human beings is to care for one another. We are meant to welcome one another, to make room for one another, to encourage one another, to help one another. That’s important for kids; that’s important for all of us.
Children need positive learning environments and supportive settings that celebrate our differences, that are proactively inclusive, that do not make them feel afraid, and that encourage and empower their unique whole selves. I am unable to accept invitations to locations that exclude, marginalize, or intimidate attendees based on racial or cultural identity, religious belief system, immigration status, ancestry, gender identity, sexual preference, appearance, disability, learning style, or other aspect of human diversity. In addition, I am unable to accept invitations to events at which guns may be present.
My values include support for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives; support for diverse books and robust access to a variety of literature and media; and support for civil liberties and civil rights. These are values I hope we all share.
Donation Requests
I receive a lot of donation requests for silent auctions and raffle items. Though I can’t respond to them all, I donate a limited number of books each year to public schools and nonreligious nonprofits. Please note that if firearms or other weapons are included in your auction or raffle items, I am unable to consider donating to your group. If you email me about a book donation request, please inform me in your email about whether or not your organization accepts firearms or weapons as auction/raffle items. Thank you!
A note about donation requests from churches and church-affiliated educational institutions: I am not a religious person, and I am a strong supporter of public education, so I do not typically donate books to church-affiliated schools or church groups. But if your religious organization is one that respects all faith traditions, is inclusive and welcoming (including LGBTQ), and actively works for social justice (helping to end racism, sexism, poverty, mass incarceration, and other forms of injustice), you are welcome to contact me about a donation. Please include in your email a note letting me know that your church is tolerant, open-minded, and actively working toward social justice.
Email Address
Though I try to be prompt, there is often a lag in my response time. If your message is time-sensitive, please indicate that in the subject line. I do respond to all emails, if sometimes slowly; so if you don’t hear back from me by the time you think you would have, please email me again to let me know (and/or check your Spam folder, in case my response got diverted.)
My email address is .
I am not active on social media. I do have Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram pages, but I am not active on those platforms. But if you don’t get a response to your email, it might somehow not be making it through my Spam filter, so you could try reaching me with a message in one of those locations.
